Biography: Smaro Gregoriadou

An award-winning guitar virtuoso, composer, and music pedagogue, Smaro Gregoriadou was born in Greece and studied in Athens and London with distinguished specialists of our time. She has toured throughout Europe, as well as in China, USA, Russia, Canada, and Australia. She is a recording artist of the American label Delos, and a member of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM).

As a composer, Smaro has studied and worked extensively on ritual forms of ancient poetry, and especially Greek Drama. This investigation led her to appreciate the exquisite musicality and highly transformative power of Rumi’s poetry on today’s world. In 2017 Smaro met Millicent Alexander who introduced her to Nevit Ergin’s translations on Divan-i-Kebir, and composed vocal music to accompany the 4-volume publication The Rubaiyat of Rumi, The Ergin Translations.
